The Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t score a run in the first 14 innings of their series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

However, after falling behind by six runs on Tuesday night, the Pirates’ offense erupted to score nine unanswered runs to pull off an improbable 9-6 win over the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

How We Got There

Corbin Carroll led off the bottom of the first with a home run off Pirates starter Mike Burrows.

Arizona (27-28) then scored four runs in the bottom off the fourth. Alek Thomas drove in a run with a base hit and Geraldo Perdomo plated two more with a single to right. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Josh Naylor each chipped in RBI singles. Hits by Perdomo, Gurriel and Naylor all came against Joey Wentz (2-1), who entered with one out and the bases loaded.

Then the Pirates’ bats woke up.

Henry Davis got the Pirates (20-36) on the board in the sixth inning with a 423-foot two-run home run off Corbin Burnes.

The Pirates scored seven runs in the top of the eighth, starting with Tommy Pham’s RBI infield single to cut the deficit to three. Two batters later, Isiah Kiner-Falefa cleared the bases with a double down the third base line to tie the game.

After Oneil Cruz reached on an error, Bryan Reynolds connected on a go-ahead three-run home run to left-center.

David Bednar converted his sixth save of the season. Pirates’ pitchers retired the final 17 batters they faced.
