The Pittsburgh Pirates received a Competitive Balance Round B draft pick, and they used it on third baseman Murf Gray from Fresno State with the 73rd overall pick.

Gray, 21, slashed .324/.398/.639 with 22 doubles, 18 home runs and 73 RBI in 60 games during his junior year in 2025. He finished tied for first in the Mountain West Conference in home runs and second in RBI en route to 2025 All-Mountain West First Team honors.

He’s considered Fresno State’s best draft prospect since Aaron Judge in 2013 and is ranked No. 141 overall by MLB Pipeline.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound right-handed hitter also performed well in the Cape Cod League last summer. In 35 games with a wooden bat, Gray hit .329 with an .867 OPS with nine doubles, five home runs, 27 RBI and five stolen bases.

His big frame produces plenty of raw power, and that translated to 40 extra-base hits this season.

Gray has a big arm that certainly plays at the hot corner, but he could wind up at first base when all is said and done. He was, however, a 2025 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Finalist.

The slot value attached to the 73rd pick is $1,128,400. The Pirates have one more pick on day one of the draft at No. 82.
