Pirates AFL Updates: Pair of Pitchers Help Toss Gem
None of the Pittsburgh Pirates hitting prospects played for the Scottsdale Scorpions on Friday night, but a pair of pitchers helped the pitching staff throw a combined gem.
Right-hander Derek Diamond was the first reliver out of the bullpen and continued his impressive showing in the AFL. Diamond allowed one hit, walked one and struck out a batter in 1.2-scoreless innings.
Diamond leads the team and is tied for fifth in the Arizona Fall League with a 2.70 ERA through six relief appearances. In 10 innings, he’s allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.
Fellow right-hander Eddy Yean was tasked with the eighth inning and tossed a perfect frame. He induced a groundout against the first batter he faced before striking out the second and a pop out to first for the third out of the inning.
The Scorpions went on the defeat the Salt River Rafters 4-1, improving to 9-12 on the year. After a day off on Saturday, they’ll face the Glendale Desert Dogs on Sunday.
