Pirates AFL Updates: Geovanny Planchart Hits First Homer

Pirates’ prospects picked up a pair of extra base hits on Saturday night, although it wasn’t enough to prevent an 8-2 loss for the Scottsdale Scorpions.

Catcher Geovanny Planchart, who signed an international free agent deal with the Pirates ahead of the 2019 season, went 1-for-3 and cleared the fences for the first time this fall league season, pulling a cutter for a line drive homer.

Shortstop Kervin Pichardo scored the only other run the Scorpions managed, tripling to lead off the second inning before scoring on a ground out.

The last Pirates’ prospect to enter the game was right-handed pitcher Valentin Linarez, who struggled mightily with command. It took Linarez 50 pitches to get through 1.2 innings, only 26 of which went for strikes. Although he walked five batters, the 24-year-old managed to limit the damage to just one run (which crossed via wild pitch after he left the game), as he also fanned three batters.

The Scorpions will be back in action at 8pm EDT Sunday when they host the Salt River Rafters.
