Pirates Add Josh Fleming to Active Roster, Place Hunter Stratton on IL
The Pittsburgh Pirates have added left-handed pitcher Josh Fleming to the active roster. Fleming takes the place of right-hander Hunter Stratton, who was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right triceps strain.
To make room for Fleming on the 40-man roster, infielder Niko Goodrum was designated for assignment.
Fleming was on the Pirates’ initial roster to start the season but was DFA’d on May 14 and outrighted to Indianapolis shortly thereafter.
In 17 appearances with the Pirates this season, Fleming is 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA. His ERA was inflated after getting tagged for five earned runs in his final appearance against the Brewers. Prior to that outing, he had a 3.50 ERA. In seven relief appearances at Triple-A, Fleming posted the same 5.68 ERA as he did in the majors.
Stratton left Thursday’s game against the Cardinals in the eighth inning after recording just one out. On the season, the right-hander is 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA and one save in 29 appearances.
Goodrum was claimed off waivers by the Pirates from the Angels on Monday and was optioned to Indianapolis. He did not appear in a game.
Additionally, right-handed reliever Ben Heller cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Indianapolis. The Pirates designated Heller for assignment on Monday after two poor showings in the big leagues.
