Pirates Activate Duane Underwood Jr, Place Yerry De Los Santos on IL
The Pirates general manager Ben Cherington has announced on his radio show that Duane Underwood Jr. has been activated Sunday and is available in the bullpen. To make room for the Underwood Jr. move, the Pirates have placed Yerry De Los Santos on the IL (non-baseball injury).
De Los Santos hasn’t seen much time while being with the big league club, but the time he did see was valuable, and he even earned two saves in his 12.2 innings pitched since being called up on May 23rd. Tough situation for the young 24-year-old Dominican native, and Cherington mentioned that it wasn’t too serious of an “injury.”
Underwood Jr. is a sight for sore eyes for this Pirates’ bullpen that has been beaten up and tired. In 17 innings pitched, Underwood Jr. has an ERA of 4.24 with 19 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.29. Underwood Jr’s last outing was on June 11th, which wasn’t pretty after three earned runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
Two days later, the Pirates placed Underwood Jr. on the 10-day IL, and 15 days later, the Pirates sent him on a rehab assignment to Double-A Altoona. Underwood Jr. allowed just one hit in three innings, struck out four, and walked none and no runs.
