It was just two innings in a game the Pittsburgh Pirates would ultimately lose.

However, the two scoreless relief innings that Roansy Contreras pitched Sunday in a 6-3 loss to the Mariners in Seattle might someday turn out to be one of the most important appearances of his career.

The Pirates have decided to move the 23-year-old right-hander from the starting rotation into the bullpen. For now, another young righty, rookie Luis Ortiz, will take regular turns in the rotation.

However, Contreras’ role as a relief pitcher is not necessarily career-altering. The Pirates have left open the possibility of him starting again, perhaps in the not-so-distant future.
