The Seattle Mariners are calling up infielder Cole Young to join their big-league club this weekend, according to Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.

Young, a graduate of Pittsburgh’s North Allegheny High School, was a first-round draft pick of the Mariners in the 2022 draft. He became the seventh WPIAL player selected in the first round since the draft started.

The 21-year-old, who is considered MLB Pipeline’s 43rd-best prospect, hit .277/.392/.461 with 13 doubles, five triples, five home runs, 26 RBI and four steals in 54 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season. He had more walks (31) than strikeouts (28).

In four seasons in the minor leagues, Young carries a .279/.388/.432 batting line with 73 doubles, 17 triples, 27 home runs, 159 RBI and 53 steals in 321 games across four levels.

In the field this season, Young has divided his time between shortstop and second base, though he’s primarily played the former in his career.

During his high school career at North Allegheny, Young became the first freshman ever selected to the Post-Gazette’s All-Area team. He was also named player of the Year in both his junior and senior seasons by the Post-Gazette and the Trib Live High School Sports Network.

In his senior season, Young hit .433 with a 1.364 OPS, eight doubles, four triples and a pair of homers. He was committed to play collegiately at Duke but opted to sign with the Mariners after they selected him 21st overall.

The Mariners are 30-26 and a half-game behind the division-leading Houston Astros in the American League West. Seattle is currently tied for the second wild card spot with the Cleveland Guardians.
