BREAKING: Pirates Deal Martin Perez to Padres for Pitching Prospect
The Pittsburgh Pirates traded left-hander Martin Perez to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday after a disappointing four-month stint with the club.
The Pirates received left-handed pitching prospect Ronaldys Jimenez in return. The 18-year-old from the Dominican Republic is in his first professional season and made three starts at the rookie-ball level, allowing one run in six innings.
Perez was just 2-5 with a 5.20 ERA in 16 starts this season while being sidelined a month with a groin injury. He went 13 starts between his two wins, beating the Washington Nationals on April 4 and defeating the St. Louis Cardinals on July 24 in his final outing with the Pirates.
The 33-year-old Perez is in 13th major-league season. He has an 87-86 record and 4.48 ERA in 304 games (259 starts) with the Texas Rangers (2012-18, 2022-23), Minnesota Twins (2019), Boston Red Sox (2020-21) and Pirates (2024).
Perez became expendable when left-hander Bailey Falter was activated from the injured list to start Tuesday night against the Astros in Houston. Falter joins a rotation that includes Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Luis Ortiz and lefty Marco Gonzales.
