PITTSBURGH — A fan in attendance at PNC Park on Wednesday night fell over the railing atop the right field wall and onto the field. The fan received immediate medical attention and was taken to Allegheny General Hospital.

Update (10:38 p.m. ET): The fan is in critical condition with a skull fracture, according to Jennifer Borrasso of KDKA.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, play came to a halt as medical personnel from both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs, as well as EMS, raced out to the warning track at the base of the 21-foot high fence to attend to the fan. The incident occurred immediately after Andrew McCutchen hit a go-ahead two-run double off Caleb Thielbar.

After a few minutes, the fan exited the stadium on a backboard accompanied by medical crews.

Play later resumed after the fan left the stadium through the tunnel in right field. There is not yet word on the fan’s condition.

The Pirates won the game 4-3 to improve their record to 12-19.

The Pirates released the following statement:

“Tonight, during the seventh inning of the game at PNC Park, an adult male fell from the right field bleachers onto the field of play. Pittsburgh EMS, as well as the Pirates and Cubs athletic training teams and other PNC Park personnel reacted and responded immediately and administered care. He was transported to Allegheny General Hospital. No further information is available at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

Manager Derek Shelton said the following during his postgame press conference:

“I just want to offer thoughts and prayers with the incident that happened earlier in the game. Thank both our medical staff, the Cubs medical staff, EMS, everybody that got to the gentleman, and just ask everybody to keep him in your prayers.”

Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson offered his thoughts after the game:

“I didn’t see anything happen, but I saw (Cubs manager Craig Counsell’s) face when he came out on the field and I could tell that it was a very scary moment. All we could do was just pray for a good, strong recovery for him and his family. I have never been part of something like that before and I hope I am never part of something like that again.

“It’s a humble reminder of the gratitude we should all have to play this game. Folks obviously come out to support us and they are a big reason why we are able to do what we do. It’s obviously tough. At a time like that, you want (the fans) to know you love them.”
