Thompson and Shelton coached together in the Yankees’ minor league system in the earlier part of their careers.

Shelton is in his fourth season at the helm in Pittsburgh. The 52-year-old has compiled a 179-284 record with the Pirates.

The Pirates’ manager was surprised by Andrew McCutchen and other Pirates’ players in the clubhouse prior to Thursday’s game.

The 2023 All-Star game will be played at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday, July 11,
