Former Pirates Bullpen Coach Bobby Cuellar Dies at 72

Former Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen coach Bobby Cuellar has died at 72.



Cuellar suffered a fatal heart attack on Monday in Houston.

Cuellar was on the Pirates’ staff under manager Jin Tracy during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He was the pitching coach for the Seattle Mariners (1995-96) and Montreal Expos (1997-2000) and the bullpen coach for the Texas Rangers (2001) and Minnesota Twins (2014-15).

Cuellar managed and coached professional baseball for 37 years before retiring from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ organization in 2019.

Cuellar pitched in pro ball for 12 years and reached the major leagues in 1977 with the Rangers, who had drafted him in the 29th round in 1974 from the University of Texas. He had no record and a 1.35 ERA in four big-league relief appearances.

Robert Cuellar was born in Alice, Texas on Aug. 20, 1952.
