During the eighth inning of Saturday’s game against the San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Ben Gamel left the game with some discomfort after stealing second base, grabbing the back of his leg. It has now been announced that Gamel was placed on the 10-Day IL with a strained left hamstring.

INF Hoy Park has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis in light of the recent Gamel IL placement. Gamel on the 2022 season is slashing .257/.350/.386 with an OPS of .736.

“We hope that it’s short term, but we are going to allow Gamel to recover for now,” said assistant general manager Kevan Graves on the Pirates radio network.

Since being sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis, Hoy Park carries a batting average of .229 with an OPS of .680 in 105 plate appearances.

“[Park] is certainly not a first baseman, but he’s shown defensive versatility,” said, Graves. “There’s still a lot of things we like about him, including the defensive versatility. We will continue to assess the roster as we go into the Dodgers series next.”
