On his weekly radio show on 93.7 The Fan, Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington provided injury updates on a trio of injured pitchers.

Cherington said that Bailey Falter threw a sim game at PNC Park and the expectation is that he will go on a rehab assignment, one that should be on the shorter side.

“Pretty optimistic about where Bailey Falter is,” said Cherington. “He did a sim game here at PNC over the break … He’s in a good spot on his way back.”

Falter was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 7 with left triceps tendinitis. Prior to getting hurt, the left-hander went 4-7 with a 4.08 ERA across 17 starts to begin the season after securing the final rotation spot of of spring training.

Fellow starter Jared Jones has been on the injured list since the Fourth of July with a right lat strain. After he was placed on the IL, it was revealed that Jones would not throw for two weeks, but Cherington said the rookie right-hander has resumed throwing.

Jones’ return to the Pirates won’t be as quick as Falter given the nature of the injury and where he is at in his recovery process and the need to build up volume and pitch count. Jones’ return will carry into August.

Jones has emerged as a key rotation piece for the Pirates this season, his first year in the big leagues. Through his first 16 starts, the 22-year-old is 5-6 with a 3.56 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 91 innings pitched.

In the bullpen, Ryan Borucki is currently rehabbing in the minor leagues but still isn’t quite ready to re-join the Pirates.

Borucki is on the 60-day injured list and has missed much of the season with left triceps inflammation. The injury is nerve-related, which Cherington said presents more of a challenge in predicting.

“It’s been a little bit more of a grind in his recovery,” Cherington said  on Borucki. “We still really believe that Ryan is in a position to impact us out of the bullpen this year. We know how important he was to us last year. The injury he had was a nerve-related injury and these are just harder to predict how they’re gonna respond.”

Cherington said that while Bourcki continues to pitch, he’s still not feeling 100%.

Pirates Re-Sign Germán

In addition to providing injury updates, Cherington also revealed that the Pirates re-signed right-handed starter Domingo Germán to a minor-league deal,

Germán exercised an opt-out clause in his original contract on July 16 but quickly returned to the organization. In 10 starts with Indianapolis this season, the right-hander has gone 4-4 with a 5.36 ERA.
