Bailey Falter Exits Pirates’ Start Left Posterior Arm Discomfort

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Bailey Falter exited his start against the New York Mets on Saturday in the third inning with left posterior arm discomfort. He is being treated and evaluated by the Pirates’ medical staff and is considered day-t0-day.
Falter issued a walk to J.D. Martinez to load the bases with nobody out and threw one pitch to Pete Alonso before manager Derek Shelton and the Pirates’ medical staff came out to check on the left-handed starter. Falter walked off the mound and into the dugout without throwing a warmup pitch.
Right-hander Dennis Santana replaced Falter in the game. Santana struck out the first two batters he faced but allowed a bases-clearing double to Luis Torrens to put the Mets ahead 3-0. All three runs were charged to Falter.
It’s the second time this homestand that a Pirates’ starting pitcher has left his start early. Rookie Jared Jones exited his start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday after five inning and 78 pitches.
The next day, Jones was placed on the 15-day injured list with a grade 2 right lat strain. He will not throw for two weeks.
Falter has been reliable out of the rotation this season for the Pirates. Entering play on Saturday, the left-hander was 4-6 with a 3.87 ERA in 16 starts. He’s third on the team with 88.1 innings pitched.
Manager Derek Shelton said postgame that the Pirates should have more information on Sunday.
