Pittsburgh Pirates, Mark Mathias

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired infielder/outfielder Mark Mathias from the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later. Mathias had been designated for assignment by Texas on Friday.

The 28-year-old Mathias split last season between the Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers. In 30 games between the two clubs, Mathias slashed .247/.319/.506 with three doubles, six home runs, 20 RBIs and three steals.

Mathias struck out 30 times in his 91 plate appearances but was able to offset the high strikeout rate some by drawing nine walks on the year.

As a big leaguer, Mathias has seen time in all three out field spots as well as first base, second base and third base. The majority of his time has come at designated hitter, however.

The native of Santa Clara, California was originally drafted by the then-Cleveland Indians in the third round of the 2015 MLB draft.

To make room for Mathias on the 40-man roster, right-hander Max Kranick was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Kranick is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in June.
