‘The Out Call is Over Turned’ Reynolds Walks it Off; Pirates Win 7-6 vs. Padres

Ke’Bryan Hayes second hit of the night was clutch, scoring the ghost runner Jake Marisnick tying it up 6-6 in extras. Bryan Reynolds then hit a clutch walk-off double, scoring Hayes winning it in the tenth inning 7-6.

The out call at home on Hayes was overturned after a very quick review. The Pirates will now try and take two out of three against the Padres Sunday afternoon with Mitch Keller pitching.

 A Cronenworth leadoff double and a Machado walk gave Eric Hosmer a chance to take the lead in the fourth inning against JT Brubaker. On a slider that looked three or four inches outside, Hosmer hit an opposite-field three-run home run giving the Padres a 3-1 lead. 

That Hosmer home run made Brubaker’s final line look less than ideal, but in all honesty, Brubaker put forth a solid night of work. Brubaker’s slider was by far his best pitch on the night, inducing all six of his swings and misses off of it. 

Brubaker’s final line read five innings pitched, five hits, three earned runs, one walk, and four strikeouts. 

In the eighth inning, Wil Crowe walked Jake Cronenworth, which gave way to David Bednar to face Manny Machado. On a 3-1 count Bednar threw a 97 mph fastball at the top of the zone, where Machado blasted a two-run home run giving the Padres a 5-3 lead.

Michael Chavis singled in Ke’Bryan Hayes after it took a deflection off Sean Manaea in the first inning, giving the Pirates a rare 1-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Roberto Perez smacked a single into left-field, setting up an RBI double by Josh VanMeter, making it a 3-2 Padres lead. The fifth inning continued with Bryan Reynolds beating out a double play allowing VanMeter to score, tying the game up 3-3.  

Chavis blasted a two-run home run after a Reynolds single in the eighth inning, knotting the game at 5-5 heading into the ninth inning.

What Are You Wearing, Jake From the Outfield?- Bad puns aside, Jake Marisnick made one of the greatest catches in left-field that we’ve seen in quite some time. Finally, the Pirates’ outfield has a very sturdy and reliable glove from left to right.

It Was Bound to Happen- In the ’22 season, Bednar hasn’t given up a single run; well, that changed in the eighth inning. These things happen; no need to burn the city down due to one bad outcome.
