The Pittsburgh Pirates have selected Beau Sulser’s contract and have added him to the 40-man roster. To make room for Sulser on the 40-man, the Pirates have DFA’d outfielder Anthony Alford. By all accounts, Sulser is in Chicago for the final game of a four-game series against the Cubs.

Sulser, the California native stands 6-foot-2, weighing in at 195-pounds pitches from the right side, and has been in the Pirates system since he was drafted in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Sulser spent four years at Dartmouth and tallied a career 3.48 ERA in 142.1 innings pitched.

So far on the 2022 season, Sulser has appeared in 12.2 innings for Triple-A Indianapolis and has put up a 2.13 ERA, walked just two, and struck out 12. With the Pirates bullpen extremely taxed, Sulser would most likely be available today since he skipped his start Saturday night for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Alford’s DFA comes as a surprise since he just came off of the IL from a sprained right wrist he obtained in spring training. The 6-foot-one, 215-pound outfielder could never put it together with the Pirates. In 149 at-bats, Alford has struck out 61 times with a batting average of .235.
