Pirates Daily: Brubaker Returns For One Last Start
Tuesday, Oct. 4, the Pittsburgh Pirates (61-99) are rounding the final stretch and will face the St. Louis Cardinals (92-68). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
The Pirates quite literally walked it off, on Monday night as they forced four straight walks and beat the Cardinals 3-2. The Pirates are a third of the way to avoiding their 100th lost.

Weather
Temperatures in Pittsburgh will dip to 58 degrees around first pitch. The sky is looking to be mostly cloudy and there will be a slight 4 mph wind blowing northwest.
Starters
The Pirates announced that JT Brubaker (3-12, 4.58 ERA) will make his final start of the season.
Brubaker will be making his first appearance since Sept. 15 against the New York Mets. Brubaker was placed on the 15-day IL due to right-shoulder inflammation.
The Cardinals will send out Dakota Hudson (8-7, 4.07 ERA).
Hudson last pitched on Sept 24. in a relief role against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hudson came in for Jordan Montgomery and pitched three shutout innings. Hudson’s last start was on Sept. 17 against the CIncinnati Reds and pitched eight shutout innings.

Who’s Hot/Who’s Not
Who’s Hot: No Pirate hitter registered a multi-hit game, but Jack Suwinski knocked his 16th home run in PNC Park and is now two away from tying Brian Giles record set in 2002 with 18 home runs at PNC. Suwinski finished the game one for two with a walk and RBI.
Who’s Not:Â Rodolfo Castro, Miguel Andujar, and Oneil Cruz combined to go hitless in nine at-bats with three walks and one RBI. The three aforementioned Pirates batters were 3-5 in the Pirates lineup on Monday.
Tidbits
- Mitch Keller has now finished his season with an ERA in the three’s. Keller’s final ERA for 2022 is 3.91.
- Keller has now improved his ERA from 2021-2022 from 6.17 to 3.91. That 2.26 difference ranks fifth in MLB since 2012 in terms of largest ERA decrease.
- Nick Mears became the 68th Pirates player used in the ’22 season. The Pirates are now one short of MLB’s record of 69 players used by the ’21 Chicago Cubs.
