PBN Around the Horn: Dollars, Deals, and Dives, Thanks Guy Fieri

Welcome to the PBN Around the Horn. Here you’ll find news and notes from across Major League Baseball, your Pittsburgh Pirates, and around the Sports Now network.

The number one question in most Pirates fans’ heads deals with the DOLLA DOLLA BILL, Y’ALL! “Will Bob Nutting spend the money?” “When will the Pirates spend Gerrit Cole money?” etc. In a small market, The Pirates will most likely never spend the $300 million contracts, but it is feasible to field a competitive team and still spend to your market.

Take, for example, the playoff runs; the Pirates picked up guys like Fransico Liriano, A.J Burnett, Russel Martin, and some key arms in the pen. Add some homegrown talent, i.e., Starling Marte, Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez, and Neil Walker; you got yourself something going.

Are the Pirates ready to compete now? No, but with some homegrown talent on the cusp of breaking into the majors and some staples in the lineup, you are some good outside contracts away from repeating the 2013 formula. Again, this is all dependant on spending money, but it doesn’t have to be Gerrit Cole money.

Pirates Prospects Notes

In week two of the new P2 format, Tim Williams, John Dreker, Wilbur Miller, Anthony Murphy, and Cody Potanko (Me) gave great pieces on all things Pirates’ prospects.

First, Tim gives us three pieces, the first is on John Baker and a growth mindset, and the second one is Carter Bins and his behind-the-plate work and how he may be underrated. The last one is an opinion piece on gifted and talented players.

Next, John gives us the best pirates prospects by age the position players edition.

The enigmatic Wilbur gives us his weekly roster preview for the High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers.

Anthony Murphy continues his excellent breakdowns of players with video and analysis. This week’s involved Oliver Mateo and that deceptive slider.

Finally, Cody Potanko (Me) gives you an update on four Pirates’ prospects and what they have been working on during the off-season.
