Pirates Preview: Can Oviedo Break Personal Losing Streak?

Pittsburgh Pirates-Johan Oviedo

The Pittsburgh Pirates (40-46) couldn’t capitalize on two separate bases loaded situations and lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers (48-38).

Osvaldo Bido couldn’t keep his control, and Roansy Contreras looked extremely rough Wednesday night.

In the top of the ninth the Pirates loaded the bases with no outs and couldn’t manage one run, and as a result, the Pirates offense and pitching failed them and  lost 6-4.

Game four between the Pirates and Dodgers will be at Dodger Stadium, with first pitch at 10:10 Eastern. You can watch all of the action on AT&T Sportsnet, or listen to the game on 93.7 The Fan.

Weather

There shouldn’t be a cloud in the sky for game one in Los Angeles. Temperatures will be around 69  degrees at first pitch, with a slight wind of 4-5 mph blowing southwest.

The Pirates will send out RHP Johan Oviedo (3-9, 4.61 ERA)

Oviedo in his last start was less than ideal. In five innings pitched, Oviedo allowed nine hits, eight earned runs, three walks, and one strikeout.

Other than his start on June 14 (four earned runs) and his previous start, Oviedo has pitched rather well. The most Oviedo has given up in that six-game span was two earned runs.

Oviedo will need to get back to his previous form if he plans on breaking his five game losing streak. Granted, he did pitch for the most part, and didn’t have much offensive support.

Oviedo has faced the Dodgers twice (one start) and holds a 1-0 record with an ERA of 6.75.

The Dodgers will send out LHP Julio Urias  (5-5, 4.94 ERA)

Urias has had an extremely rough last seven games for the Dodgers. In his last 34.2 innings pitched, Urias has a record of 2-4 with an ERA of 7.01.

In his last start, Urias pitched three innings against Kansas City, gave up six hits, five earned runs, two walks, while striking out two Royals.

Urias offers a four-pitch mix with a four-seam (46.8%), slurve (28.8%), changeup (15.2%), and a cutter (9.2%). In addition, Urias’ four-seam averages 93 mph.

Urias has faced the Pirates eight times (five starts) and holds a 3-3 record and an ERA of 4.17.

Dodgers Hitters vs. Oviedo

  • Freddie Freeman: 2-3 with one double
  • Jason Heyward: 1-8

Pirates Hitters vs. Miller

  • Bryan Reynolds: 5-14 with a homer
  • Tucupita Marcano: 2-6 with one homer
  • Rodolfo Castro: 2-4 with one homer
  • Connor Joe: 1-10 with a homer
  • Austin Hedges: 0-6

Tidbits

  • A Pirates starting pitcher has yet to go more than five innings since June 28, when Mitch Keller pitched six innings. Between that start and Wednesday, the Pirates have had seven starters.
  • Urias is 38-13 in night games with a 2.99 ERA in 472.1 innings pitched.
  • This will be Oviedo’s first appearance in Los Angeles.
