Pirates Roster Moves: Mlodzinski Back With Bucs, Bart Cleared for Rehab

Carmen Mlodzinski, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right-handed pitcher Carmen Mldozinski from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned fellow right-hander Kyle Nicolas. Mlodzinski is active for Wednesday’s series finale against the Miami Marlins.

The Pirates decided to use Mlodzinski in their rotation to start the season after he spent the last two seasons pitching out of the bullpen. In nine starts to begin the season, he went 1-4 with a 5.67 ERA (25er/39.2ip) and struck out 28 batters.

Mlodzinski was optioned to Indianapolis on May 21, where he continued his work as a starting pitcher. In three starts with Indianapolis, the 26-year-old went 2-0 with a 1.15 ERA (2er/15.2ip). He allowed 11 hits, walked seven and struck out 16 batters. Mlodzinski was scratched from his start with Indianapolis on Tuesday night ahead of getting recalled.

In 75 appearances while operating primarily as a reliever with the Pirates from 2023-24, Mlodzinski went 8-8 with a 2.91 ERA (28er/86.2ip) and recorded one save.

As for Nicolas, the right-hander made three appearances out of the bullpen and allowed one run in 4.1 innings since he was recalled on June 3.

In 10 appearances on the season with the Pirates, Nicolas has a 7.50 ERA (10er/12.0ip). Command has been an issue for the 26-year-old as evident by nine walks against eight strikeouts. Opponents have hit .260 with an .827 OPS against him.

Additionally, catcher Joey Bart will begin a rehab assignment with Indianapolis on Wednesday afternoon. Bart was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list on May 28.

Bart has totaled 44 games with the Pirates this season and is slashing .240/.347/.308 with five doubles, one triple, one home run and 11 RBI.

In addition to Bart, catcher Endy Rodríguez is on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. Henry Davis has handled the Pirates’ primary catching duties and Brett Sullivan was recalled from Indianapolis earlier in the homestand.
