Pirates Preview: Can Bucs Break Out Brooms Against Mighty Phillies?

The Pittsburgh Pirates secured a series win over the Philadelphia Phillies with a 4-1 win at PNC Park in front of a sellout crowd on Saturday night.



Luis Ortiz held the Phillies (62-36) in check with seven-shutout innings, his longest start of the season. Oneil Cruz homered and drove in three runs and Andrew McCutchen broke a scoreless-tie in the sixth with a 431-foot solo home run.

The Pirates (50-48) will try and break out the brooms against their Keystone counterparts in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

First pitch is set for 1:35 ET and the game will be aired on SportsNet Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Will Send Out LHP Marco Gonzales (1-0, 2.45 ERA)

Gonzales returned from the injured list on the Friday before the All-Star break and held the Chicago White Sox to one run in five innings pitched. His efforts resulted in his first win of the season.

The left-hander had been on the IL since Apr. 14 with a left forearm muscle strain.

Prior to getting hurt, Gonzales made three strong starts with the Pirates and posted 2.65 ERA across 17 innings pitched.

Gonzales has faced the Phillies twice in his career. He’s 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA against them.

The Philadelphia Phillies Will Send Out RHP Tyler Phillips (1-0, 4.50 ERA)

Phillips made his MLB debut in a four-inning relief stint on July 7 and made his first-career start on July 13 against the Oakland A’s.

Between the first two appearances of his career, Phillips has allowed five runs in 10 innings pitched and has struck out 12 batters without issuing a walk.

Across 15 starts in Triple-A this season, the 26-year old went 7-3 with a 4.89 ERA. He throws a sweeper, sinker, four-seamer and curveball.

This will be his first time facing the Pirates.
