Pirates AFL Updates: Pitching Front and Center in Blowout Loss
The Scottsdale Scorpions, the Arizona Fall League team consisting of prospects from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays, endured a 19-3 loss to the Mesa Solar Sox on Wednesday night.
Although Pirates’ prospects played a major role in Scottsdale’s season opening win on Tuesday, the opposite happened last night as they ended up front and center to the blowout.
Mesa blew the game open against 23-year-old Australian pitcher Brandan Bidois, who signed with Pittsburgh as an international free agent out of high school in 2019 and has since made his way to Triple-A. The lanky right-hander entered an already devolving situation in the third inning, with a runner on first via error. Bidois allowed consecutive hits, then a steal of first base on a wild pitch strikeout: Mesa went on to plate six runs against him to just one out recorded.
Pirates’ catching prospect Geovanny Planchart also had a rough inning, committing a throwing error and a passed ball that helped Scorpions continue to unravel. Planchart did his best to make up for it, though, catching a runner stealing and picking another off first base. At the plate, the 23-year-old backstop went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Derek Diamond, who started much of the year for the Greensboro Grasshoppers, was the last Pirates prospect to get in the game, entering in the eighth and allowing two earned runs (and two more unearned) in two innings of work. He also added a pair of strikeouts.
Scottsdale’s schedule continues at 9:30pm EDT on Thursday against the Surprise Scorpions.
