229-Game Winner Luis Tiant, Who Spent a Year With Pirates, Dies at 83

Luis Tiant, who won 229 games in his 19-year career and spent one season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, has died. He was 83.



The Boston Red Sox announced Tiant’s death Tuesday. They said he died at his home in Maine but provided no further details.

The charismatic right-hander is best remembered for his eight-year run with the Red Sox from 1971-78. He won all four starts in the 1975 postseason when the Red Sox reached the World Series and lost to the Cincinnati Reds in seven games.

Tiant spent part of the 1981 season with the Pirates, making nine starts during the strike-interrupted campaign. He was 2-5 with a 3.92 ERA.

Tiant also had stints with Cleveland (1964-69), the Minnesota Twins (1970), New York Yankees (1979-80) and California Angels (1982).

Tiant was a three-time All-Star and won two ERA titles while compiling a 229-172 record and 3.30 ERA in 573 games, including 484 starts.
