Watch: Progression of Pirates All-Time WAR Leader Over Time
Greg Harvey of Baseball Cloud tweeted out a graphic that shows the Pirates’ all-time leader in WAR since 1882. The list begins with the great Ed Swartwood, who in addition to being arguably the game’s best player in 1883, was born before the start of the Civil War. Honus Wagner, the current all-time leader for the Bucs (120.1 WAR), has remained atop the list since 1903.
Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Barry Bonds, Ralph Kiner and Andrew McCutchen are among the all-time top 15 as the list progresses towards the present. Check out the entire progression in Harvey’s tweet here.
The next team in the Position Player WAR series are the @Pirates, who were formed in 1882. They were previously named the Alleghenys.
