Kavan Markwood, the fan who fell from the right field stands at PNC Park on Wednesday night, is awake, alert and able to speak.

The news was shared on a GoFundMe page organized by Jennifer Phillips, the mother of Kavan’s girlfriend.

“After everything he’s been through since the accident on Wednesday night, this progress feels nothing short of miraculous,” wrote Phillips. “He still has a long road ahead of him, but today brought a moment of hope that we’ve all been holding onto. Thank you all so much for your prayers, support, and generosity.”

In the bottom of the seventh inning of a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs, Markwood fell over the railing and onto the right field warning track while celebrating Andrew McCutchen’s go-ahead double.

Play paused as Markwood was being tended to by medical staffs from both the Pirates and Cubs as well as EMS professionals stationed at the ballpark. The 20-year-old was taken off the field on a backboard before he was transported to nearby Allegheny General Hospital, where he arrived in critical condition.

The GoFundMe page set up for Markwood can be found here. As of 4:00 p.m. ET, the page raised over $25,000 of the $35,000 goal.
