Top Two Prospects Will Represent Pirates at Futures Game
The Pittsburgh Pirates’ top two prospects will represent the organization at this year’s Futures Game in Arlington, Texas.
Right-handed pitcher Bubba Chandler and infielder Termarr Johnson are both headed to All-Star Weekend.
MLB Pipeline recently updated their top prospects list and Chandler is the new top Pirates’ prospect in wake of Paul Skenes’ graduation. Chandler checks in at No. 52 on the top 100 list.
The 21-year-old has spent the season with Double-A Altoona and is 4-5 with a 4.17 ERA through 14 starts/12 appearances. In 54 innings, he’s walked 22 and struck out 68 while holding opponents to a .202 batting average.
The third-round draft pick of the Pirates in 2021 has been on a tear of late. Over his last two starts, Chandler has allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and 21 strikeouts in 13.2 innings. He struck out a career-high 10 batters on June 21 only to set a new career-high with 11 punch outs in his most recent start.
Johnson, who is right behind Chandler as the Pirates’ No. 2 prospect, is ranked No. 77 in the league.
The Pirates took Johnson with the fourth pick in the 2022 draft and the 20-year-old has been with High-A Greensboro this season. With the Grasshoppers, Johnson is hitting .226 with a .379 on-base percentage and has clubbed seven home runs with 31 RBIs and 13 steals in 72 games. His efforts are good for a 117 wRC+.
The Futures game will be played on Saturday, July 13 at 4:00 ET at Globe Life Field.
