Former Pirates Infielder Tommy Helms Dies at 83

Tommy Helms, who spent two of his 14 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, has died. He was 83.
The Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame announced Helms’ passing on Sunday but did not provide a cause of death.
The infielder appeared in 77 games for the Pirates in 1976-77, batting .242/.313/.343 with one home run. The Pirates released Helms during the 1977 season, and he finished his career with the Boston Red Sox later that season.
Helms also played for the Cincinnati Reds (1964-71) and Houston Astros (1972-75). He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1966, was selected to two All-Star Games and won two NL Gold Gloves as a second baseman.
In 1,435 games, Helms hit .269/.300/.342 with 34 home runs. He also managed the Reds during the 1988 and 1989 seasons and had a 28-36 record.
Tommy Vann Helms was born on May 5, 1941, in Charlotte.
