Tigers Claim Sam Howard Off Waivers From Pirates

The Detroit Tigers announced that they have claimed left-handed pitcher Sam Howard off waivers from the Pirates. The Bucs designated Howard for assignment last week to add Michael Perez to the roster.

Pittsburgh originally claimed Howard off waivers from the Rockies in Oct. 2019. The left-hander emerged as a strong piece out of the bullpen with a 3.86 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 21 innings, albeit with a subpar 4.81 ERA. The good fortune for Howard ran out and he complied a 5.74 ERA/5.34 FIP in 57 appearances between 2021-22.

Howard has always been a high strikeout pitcher, fanning 112 batters in 91 innings for his big league career. With the high strikeout rate, comes a lot of walks and home runs. Howard has issued 58 free passes and allowed 17 home runs in his time between the Pirates and Rockies.

The Tigers are hoping that they can limit the free passes and long balls but maintain the high strikeout rate and have an effective reliever for their club moving forward.
