‘Sell The Team Bob’ Banner Flies Over PNC Park Ahead of Pirates Home Opener

Pittsburgh Pirates, PNC Park

A home opener usually brings excitement, eagerness and enthusiasm to a fanbase returning to the ballpark for the first time since the fall. While that is still the case to some extent in Pittsburgh, there’s no ignoring the frustration fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates are feeling prior to their first home game on Friday against the New York Yankees.

On one hand, the Pirates’ return to PNC Park is a familiar feeling to many lifelong fans. The start of baseball almost everyday for the next sixth months begins. But the restlessness that could already be felt is even more apparent after a 2-5 start to the season.

The Pirates opened up their season by suffering walk-off losses in three out of four games against the Miami Marlins before dropping two out of three against the Tampa Bay Rays earlier in the week.

Fan frustration was on display on the North Shore of Pittsburgh even before the gates were opened to the public.

In the hours leading up to first pitch, a plane with a banner reading “SELL THE TEAM BOB” and the name of the website ourteamnothis.com, was flying overhead the stadium.

Many Pirates’ fans have voiced their frustrations with owner Bob Nutting over the years, but the latest display has been taken to new heights — literally.

The Pirates have not been to the postseason since they reached three-straight Wild Card games from 2013-15 and have compiled only four winning seasons during Nutting’s tenure as owner.

The Pirates begin a six-game homestand with their home opener on Friday. After a weekend series against the Yankees, they’ll begin a three-game series with the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, the first home night game of the season.
