Roansy Contreras, Luis Ortiz Shine for Dominicans in WBC
Pittsburgh Pirates right-handers Roansy Contreras and Luis Ortiz had outstanding debuts at the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday.
Contreras started and pitched 2.2 innings for the win at the Dominican Republic blanked Israel 10-0 in pool play at loanDepot Park in Miami. Ortiz pitched two perfect innings of relief.
Contreras allowed only one hit while striking out four and walking one. He threw 41 pitches, 28 for strikes.
Ortiz struck out three while needing just 23 pitches to complete his two innings. He had 16 strikes.
Pirates outfielder Chavez Young went 1 for 3 with a double and stolen base for Great Britain in its 2-1 loss to Mexico at Chase Field in Phoenix. He also struck out once as the Brits failed to advance to the quarterfinals.
In four games, Young went 4 for 13 (.308) with four runs scored, a double, two RBIs and five stolen bases. He walked three times and struck out three times.
Pirates left-hander Rob Zastryzny did not pitch for Canada in its 5-0 blanking of Colombia in Phoenix.
