Williams: Ben Cherington’s Pittsburgh Pirates Trade History

Wednesday, Aug. 3, the Pittsburgh Pirates (41-62) play game two of a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers (57-46). The weather in Pittsburgh is supposed to be sunny and 88 degrees at 7:05 p.m. (first pitch) at PNC Park. A southwest wind will be blowing around 7 mph, and no rain is expected.

You can watch the game on AT&T Sportsnet Pittsburgh, or listen on 93.7 The Fan.

Starters

Starting for the Pirates will be right-handed pitcher Tyler Beede (1-1, 3.12 ERA) as they go with a bullpen game. His mound opponent will be Freddy Peralta (3-2, 4.42 ERA)

In his last 13 innings pitched, Beede has an ERA of 2.08 ERA. Bumped up to his last 30.2 innings pitched, Beede has a 2.64 ERA.

Peralta will be activated from the injured list before the game. He has been out since May 28 with a strained right lat.

Betting Odds

The Pittsburgh Pirates open up as +170 underdogs, with the Brewers sitting at -200 favorites on the moneyline. The over/under has opened up at eight runs, with the run line at PIT +1.5 (+102) and MIL -1.5 (-125).

Who’s Hot/Who’s Not?

Who’s Hot: Manny Bañuelos has pitched effectively in his last seven games. In six innings pitched, Bañuelos has given up just one run, walked two, and struck out five.

Who’s Not: It’s an extremely small sample size, but in his 26 at-bats, Greg Allen has struck out 10 times and has just a .115 batting average.

Tidbits

  • Prior to Tuesday night, Kevin Newman hit safely in five straight games (10-for-22, .455) and in seven of his last nine games, going 14-for-39 (.359) with six doubles, a triple, four RBIs, .405 OBP, and .969 OPS…Since being reinstated from the 60-day injured list on July 8, Newman’s 23 hits are tied for the seventh-most among all National League players.
  • This is the third and final series between the Pirates and Brewers this season at PNC Park. The Bucs split a four-game series against the Brew Crew the last time the teams met at PNC Park from June 30-July 3 after being swept in three games during their first series here in Pittsburgh earlier this year from April 26-28.
  • Bryan Reynolds has collected 62 career hits against the Brewers, his most vs. any team in his career. That is the against the Brewers since the start of the 2019 season. Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is second with 60.
