Pittsburgh Pirates Transactions: Ben Gamel Returns; Anthony Alford to IL

The Pirates announced several transactions on Sunday, including the addition of outfielder Ben Gamel. Gamel has been on the 10-day injured list since Aug. 6 with a right hamstring strain. Gamel will play in left field and lead off in the rubber match against the Milwaukee Brewers

The corresponding move to activate Gamel was to place outfielder Anthony Alford on the IL. Alford was a last-minute scratch in Saturday’s game, and during the post-game press conference, manager Derek Shelton mentioned it was a back strain.

“He was only available in an emergency [Saturday] and we want to put Anthony out there when he’s feeling good, so we will give him a few days to recover,” general manager Ben Cherington said on Sunday.

Right-handed relief pitcher Shea Spitzbarth was sent back down to Triple-A Indianapolis. Spitzbarth appeared in the second game of the doubleheader in the seventh inning, where he pitched a full inning and gave up a home run to Avisail Garcia.

The Pirates also announced that starting pitcher Bryse Wilson was placed on the IL with arm fatigue.
