Pirates Signing Veteran Left-Hander Andrew Heaney

Though spring training is underway, the Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t finished adding to their roster.
The Pirates have agreed to a deal with left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney, a source confirmed to Pittsburgh Baseball Now. The deal, which is pending a physical, is for one year and $5.25 million, according to multiple reports.
Heaney, 33, spent the last two years pitching for the Texas Rangers and won the World Series with them in 2023 after going 10-6 with a 4.15 ERA across 34 appearances/28 starts during the regular season. Last season, Heaney finished a horrid 5-14 but had a 4.28 ERA in a career-high 31 starts (32 total appearances). In 160 innings, he struck out 159 batters and walked 41.
An 11-year major-league veteran, Heaney has gone 51-62 with a 4.45 ERA in 203 appearances/185 starts totaling just over 1,000 innings. In addition to the Rangers, Heaney has played for the Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and Miami Marlins.
The Pirates were in need of additional veteran starting pitching depth after trading Luis Ortiz to the Cleveland Guardians during the offseason.
The Pirates’ current starting rotation projects to consist of Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Jared Jones, Bailey Falter and Johan Oviedo. Oviedo, however, missed the entire 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last offseason.
Additionally, the Pirates have several top prospects knocking on the door to the big leagues in Bubba Chandler, Braxton Ashcraft and Thomas Harrington.
Heaney is one of a handful of free agents the Pirates have signed to one-year deals this offseason. The others are Andrew McCutchen, Tommy Pham, Adam Frazier, Caleb Ferguson and Tim Mayza.
