Pirates Sign Carson Fulmer to Minor-League Deal

Carson Fulmer, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates will have a new but somewhat familiar face with them at spring training after signing right-hander Carson Fulmer to a minor-league deal, a source confirmed to Pittsburgh Baseball Now.

Fulmer, despite not appearing in a game for the Pirates, has technically had three different stints with Pittsburgh. Fulmer was with the organization in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season but was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles in early September.

A few weeks later, the Pirates reclaimed Fulmer but designated him for assignment during spring training the following season. After bouncing between a few organizations the next few years, the Pirates signed Fulmer to a minor-league contract last offseason, and the right-hander made 13 appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis before he was released in June and picked up by the Los Angeles Angels.

The 32-year-old made 13 appearances with the Angels last season and had a 5.83 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 29.1 innings. In parts of nine big league seasons with five teams, Fulmer is 7-15 with a 5.44 ERA in 127 appearances/24 starts.

Fulmer was originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox with the eighth pick in the 2015 draft out of Vanderbilt University and peaked as high as the 38th-best prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline entering the 2016 season.
