Pirates Roster Moves: Password Unlocked; Garcia Joins Team in St. Louis

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia from Triple-A Indianapolis ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
Nicknamed βThe Password,β Garcia was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in the offseason in a five-player swap involving right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo.
Garcia, who is ranked as Pittsburgh’s fourth-best prospect by MLB Pipeline and Baseball America, hit .205 with a .613 OPS in 19 games with Indianapolis this season. In five games after returning from a rehab assignment, the 23-year-old hit .375 with four RBI and three walks. Garcia went 5 for 5 with three home runs against Louisville on April 12, his first game back after he was reinstated from the injured list.
In parts of six minor-league seasons, Garcia owns a .260/.347/.465 batting line with 70 doubles, 21 triples, 61 home runs, 222 RBI and 42 RBI in 403 games. Defensively, he’s spent time at all three outfield positions, primarily in center field.
Garcia made his MLB debut with the Red Sox last season and went 1 for 7 with a double combined between five games.
Garcia, who will wear No. 34, will make his Pirates debut in right field and will bat sixth against the Cardinals on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium.
Garcia takes the place of infielder/outfielder Nick Yorke, who was optioned to Indianapolis following Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. In 27 games with the Pirates this season across two stints, Yorke owns a .197/.279/.276 batting line with three doubles, one home run and six RBI. He had gone hitless over his last 10 at-bats.
Starting right fielder Ryan O’Hearn was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday with a right quad strain.
