Cody Bolton, Pittsburgh Pirates

Cody Bolton’s back-and-forth season lives on. The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled the right-hander from the minor leagues for what will be his seventh stint with the club this season.

To make room for him on the roster, fellow right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz was optioned down to the minors.

On the season, Bolton has logged 19.1 innings with Pittsburgh across 14 appearances out of the bullpen. The 25-year-old is 1-0 with a 6.52 ERA, 15 walks and 21 strikeouts.

Bolton gives the Pirates a fresh arm for their final series of the season, starting Friday night against the Miami Marlins.

Ortiz earned the win for the Pirates against the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night. In that game, he allowed one run in 5.0 innings while striking out four batters.

It was a challenging season for Ortiz, who to a much lesser extent than Bolton, split time between Pittsburgh and Triple-A Indianapolis.

Ortiz wraps up his 2023 season with a 5-5 record and a 4.78 ERA in 18 appearances (15 starts) with the big league club.
