Pirates Prospect Watch: Nick Gonzales Has Big Night For Altoona

After an off day on Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top four minor league affiliates were all back in action on Tuesday night.

It was a big night with the bats throughout the system. For the Altoona Curve, every player in the lineup reached base safely at least one time. Among them was Nick Gonzales, who enjoyed a big night at the plate for the Curve.

Here is more on Gonzales and some other Pirates’ prospects who had impressive performances on Tuesday.

Indianapolis Indians (62-60)

INF Diego Castillo

  • Game: 2 for 3 with a home run, an RBI, two runs and two walks
  • Season: .272/.350/.412, four doubles, three home runs, 11 RBIs, 24 games

OF Cal Mitchell

  • Game: 3 for 5 with a double and a run
  • Season: .338/.391/.537, 18 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 47 RBIs, eight steals, 62 games

The Indians lost 7-6 in 10 innings to the Louisville Bats, but a number of position players performed well. Castillo and Mitchell both stayed hot as the duo combined to reach base seven times.

Mason Martin picked up a pair of hits including a double, as did Jared Oliva. Cody Bolton banked the Bats and picked up three strikeouts in 2.2 innings out of the bullpen.

Altoona Curve (60-60)

2B Nick Gonzales

  • Game: 3 for 4 with two doubles, four RBIs and a sacrifice fly
  • Season: .257/.381/.401, 14 doubles, five home runs, 24 RBIs, five steals, 56 games

RHP Carmen Mlodzinski

  • Game: 6.0 innings, five hits, three runs, one walk, five strikeouts
  • Season: 4-8, 5.12 ERA, 91.1 innings, 96 hits, 37 walks, 96 strikeouts, 24 games/19 starts

Gonzales led the way in a big night with the Bats for the Curve in their 7-5 win over the Akron RubberDucks. Henry Davis finished the night 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Mlodzinski picked up his fourth win of the season with a quality start. Enmanuel Mejia picked up four punch outs in two innings of relief.

Greensboro Grasshoppers (54-64)

RHP Justin Meis

  • Game: 7.0 innings, three hits, no runs, two walks, six strikeouts
  • Season: 3-4, 4.70 ERA, 61.1 innings, 53 hits, 29 walks, 64 strikeouts, 14 games/14 starts

INF Mike Jarvis

  • Game: 2 for 3 with a home run, an RBI, two runs and a walk
  • Season: .203/.280/.459, one double, six home runs, 17 RBIs, nine steals, 21 games

Meis and the Grasshoppers kept rolling in their 7-1 win over the Winston-Salem Dash. For Greensboro, they’ve won six of their last seven. For Meis, he lowered his August ERA to 3.07 across five starts.

Jarvis and Jase Bowen each went deep in the win, and Hudson Head and Jackson Glenn each picked up a pair of hits,

Bradenton Marauders (62-58)

1B Brendan Dixon

  • Game: 3 for 4 with a double, three RBIs, three runs and a walk
  • Season: .218/.345/.364, 12 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 36 RBIs, six steals, 84 games

INF Norkis Marcos

  • Game: 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs, a run and a walk
  • Season: .200/.291/.352, three doubles, two triples, five home runs, 21 RBIs, 12 steals, 50 games

The Maruaders’ offense exploded for 11 runs in their 11-9 victory over the Fort Myers Might Muscles. Dixon and Marcos helped to pace that explosion as the duo both enjoyed big games.

Matt Gorski, who began a rehab assignment on Tuesday, homered in the game.
