Pirates Prospect Watch: Greensboro, Bradenton Combine For 32 Runs
In Tuesday’s edition of Pirates Prospect Daily, Bubba Chandler and Jack Suwinski took center stage among Pirates’ prospects with the top performances. All four of the Pirates’ top affiliates were again in action, and here are the farmhands who performed the best.
Indianapolis Indians
INF Rodolfo Castro
- Game: 2 for 3, one walk
- Season: .234/.332/.429, 10 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 30 RBIs, six steals, 66 games
UT Tucupita Marcano
- Game: 2 for 4
- Season: .325/.426/.500, four doubles, one home run, three RBIs, 10 games
Pretty slim pickings for the Indians, who were blanked 3-0 by Toledo. Castro led Indianapolis by reaching base three times, and Marcano stayed hot with a pair of hits. Outfield prospect Travis Swaggerty went 1 for 4 with a double.
Altoona Curve
OF Fabricio Macias
- Game: 1 for 2, one home run, two RBIs, two runs, two walks
- Season: .328/.344/.492, seven doubles, one home run, 14 RBIs, 16 games
OF Matt Fraizer
- Game: 1 for 3, one RBI, one walk
- Season: .228/.292/.373, 16 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, 36 RBIs, 14 steals, 80 games
Macias continued his hot stretch of play in his first 16 games with the Curve this season. He provided the bulk of the offense for the Curve, who were smacked by Bowie 12-3. After a slow start to the season, Fraizer, ranked as the ninth-best Pirates’ prospect by MLB Pipeline, is starting to heat up at the plate, posting an .823 OPS in July.
Greensboro Grasshoppers
1B Jacob Gonzalez
- Game: 4 for 6, one home run, two RBIs, three runs,
- Season: .315/.376/.472, 11 doubles, one triple, six home runs, 28 RBIs, 51 games
C/DH Abrahan Gutierrez
- Game: 2 for 4, one home run, two RBIs, three runs, two walks
- Season: .262/.361/.407, 14 doubles, eight home runs, 39 RBIs, 76 games
The Grasshoppers’ offense exploded in a 19-5 crushing win over Winston-Salem. Gonzalez has been hot all season between Low-A Bradenton and Greensboro.
Gutierrez, acquired from the Phillies during last year’s trade deadline, also had a strong day at the plate. Four different players hit home runs, and Endy Rodriguez’s hot stretch continued as he was on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Bradenton Marauders
OF Jase Bowen
- Game: 2 for 3, two RBIs, two runs, one walk
- Season: .272/.351/.425, 16 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 54 RBIs, 20 steals, 88 games
OF Angel Basabe
- Game: 3 for 5, one triple, one RBI, two runs
- Season: .257/.353/.378, one double, four triples, four RBIs, three steals, 25 games
Bowen and Basabe both had a big hand in Bradenton’s 13-5 win over Lakeland, combining for five hits and four runs scored. Pirates prospect OF Sergio Campana blasted his fourth home run of the season in the rout. The Pirates tagged Tigers’ 2021 first-round pick Jackson Jobe for five earned runs in 3.1 innings.
