In need of a spot on the 40-man roster for free agent signing Marcell Ozuna, the Pittsburgh Pirates are designating outfielder Jack Suwinski for assignment, as first reported by FanSided’s Robert Murray.

Suwinski, led the Pirates with 26 home runs and a .793 OPS in 144 games in 2023 but has struggled ever since. In 147 games combined between the last two seasons, the 27-year-old posted a .169/.271/.297 batting line with 15 doubles, 12 home runs and 36 RBI while striking out in nearly 30% of his plate appearances.

Among players with at least 450 plate appearances since the start of the 2024 season, Suwinski ranked last in batting average, and third to last in wRC+ (59) and fWAR (-1.7).

Earlier this offseason, the Pirates surprisingly tendered a contract to Suwinski for the 2026 season for $1.25 million. By designating him for assignment, Suwinski is taken off the 40-man roster and the Pirates will have seven days to work out a trade or place him on waivers.

The Pirates signed Ozuna to a one-year, $12 million deal that includes a $16 million mutual option and a $1.5 million buyout for 2026.
