The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated right-handed relief pitcher Chase Shugart for assignment.

Shugart was acquired by the Pirates from the Boston Red Sox last offseason. The 29-year-old made 35 appearances out of the bullpen for Pittsburgh last offseason and went 4-3 with a 3.40 ERA while holding opponents to a .206 batting average. He earned his first big-league win on April 22 against the Los Angeles Angles.

Shugart also made 12 appearances with Triple-A Indianapolis and went 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA and one save.

The Pirates needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for first baseman/outfielder Ryan O’Hearn, who officially signed a two-year deal on Thursday.

I hope they don’t regret this. I guess they didn’t like his peripherals. He seemed to do it with smoke and mirrors. They must have liked him less than Cam Sanders, Yohan Ramirez, or even position players like Enmanuel Valdez.

I see they signed Chris Devenski to a minor league deal. This could be huge. He was always tough, and although the fastball velo is down, he still has a wicked changeup.

At this time of the year organization are juggling players and positions and I’ve seen it year after year shugart should be there at the start of this season not too worried

Nope. Traded to the Phillies for a minor league infielder. I thought he had some value.
