Pirates GM Ben Cherington Gives Updates on Rodriguez, Burrows, and Swaggerty
Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington spoke with the media Saturday afternoon and gave a few updates on injured prospects Endy Rodriguez, Mike Burrows, and Travis Swaggerty.
As we all know, Rodriguez was removed from Triple-A Indianapolis’ game and placed on the 7-day injured list with a forearm issue.
“He’s going to get seen here in Pittsburgh early in the week,” said Cherington on Rodriguez. “We’re hopeful and optimistic that he’s already feeling a little bit better. He’s obviously really important, so we want to make sure we have all of the information we can. He should be in Pittsburgh on Monday and get seen, and we should have some more information after that.”
Cherington continued.
“We’ve been hit with an injury bug early on both at the major league level and at the Triple-A level, and obviously, some are longer terms with Oneil and Brubaker. We hope that Endy is one of those shorter-term cases. He felt some stiffness in the forearm, and we just want to be careful with that.”
Burrows saw action on April 8 for Triple-A Indianapolis and was removed from the game after 1.2 innings pitched, and he didn’t look as he left the field.
On April 11, Burrows was placed on the 7-day IL with an elbow injury.
“We should have more clarity this coming week,” said Cherington on Burrows. “I think by the time Todd Tomczak speaks on Wednesday, we should have more information”
Swaggerty was the oddest of them all after being removed from a Triple-A Indianapolis game with an illness, and then on April 21, Swaggerty was placed on the 7-day IL, retro to April 20 with an “illness.”
“He was feeling better yesterday,” said Cherington on Swaggerty. “I haven’t had a chance to look at the lineup in Indy today, but I think we were expecting him to be available. Hopefully, he’s on the mend.”
