Source: Pirates Adding Pitching Prospect Mike Burrows to Taxi Squad
The Pittsburgh Pirates are adding one of their top pitching prospects to the taxi squad. Right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows will join the Pirates in New York on Friday for the final series of the year against the New York Yankees, a source told Pittsburgh Baseball Now.
Burrows was selected by the Pirates in the 11th round of the 2018 draft out of Waterford High School in Connecticut. The 24-year-old is the organization’s No. 16 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He represented the Pirates at the 2022 Futures Game during All-Star weekend.
Burrows reached Triple-A Indianapolis last season but made just two starts before he underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery in April.
The right-hander made his return to the mound this year in the middle of June and totaled 16 appearances across three different levels. Combined, Burrows finished 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 51.1 innings. In 10 appearances with Indianapolis, he went 1-1 with a 4.06 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 15 walks in 37.2 innings.
Across six minor league seasons, Burrows is 10-14 with a 3.72 ERA in 70 appearances/66 starts. In 259 innings, he’s issued 101 walks, totaled 291 strikeouts and held opponents to a .223 batting average.
The Pirates’ rotation for their three-game series against the Yankees is set. Jared Jones will pitch on Friday night, followed by Paul Skenes on Saturday and Bailey Falter in the season finale on Sunday.
