One day after acquiring Taylor Rogers in the trade that sent Ke’Bryan Hayes to the Cincinnati Reds, the Pittsburgh Pirates have flipped the left-handed reliever to the Chicago Cubs for minor league  outfielder Ivan Brethowr.

Rogers was one of two players the Pirates acquired from the Reds for Hayes, along with shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura. The 34-year-old went 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA across 40 relief appearances for the Reds prior to the trade.

Brethowr was selected by the Cubs in the seventh round of last year’s draft out of UCSB. In 83 games with High-A South Bend this season, the 22-year-old slashed .221/.398/.312 with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 26 RBI and 25 steals.

Defensively, Brethowr has primarily manned right field, but has also played a handful of games in left in his minor league career.

This is a salary dump trade for the Pirates. Rogers was owed the remaining balance of a $12 million salary for the 2025 season.

It’s the Pirates third trade of the day. Pittsburgh agreed to a trade that will send closing pitcher David Bednar to the New York Yankees for three prospects, a deal that is pending medical reviews. The Pirates also traded left-handed starter Bailey Falter to the Kansas City Royals for two players.
