Pirates Trade Minor League Catcher Eli Wilson to Padres

The Pittsburgh Pirates had another trade in them after making six deals leading up to the deadline.

The Pirates traded minor league catcher Eli Wilson to the San Diego Padres. Though there is no official word on the return, the assumption is the deal was made for cash considerations.

Teams are permitted to trade players not on the 40-man roster once the deadline passes, and Wilson, who was with Triple-A Indianapolis, fits the criteria. In 11 games at Triple-A this season, Wilson slashed .294/.314/.441 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBI.

The Pirates drafted Wilson in the 16th round out of the University of Minnesota in the 2019 draft. The 27-year-old spent parts of six seasons in the organization and slashed .244/.347/.399 with 37 doubles, five triples, 26 home runs and 118 RBI in 258 games.

Wilson carried a .991 fielding percentage in 194 career games behind the plate and posted a 27% caught stealing rate.

He is the son of Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson.
