The Pittsburgh Pirates traded infielder/outfielder Diego Castillo to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday for minor league right-hander Scott Randall.

The Pirates also lost reliever Nick Mears to the Texas Rangers on a waiver claim.

Both Castillo and Mears had been designated for assignment earlier in the week.

Randall, 24, was 6-7 with a 3.82 ERA in 21 starts for High-A Hillsboro last season. He had a 1.16 WHIP and 104 strikeouts in 108.1 innings.

The Diamondbacks drafted Randall in the seventh round in 2021 from Sacramento State.

Castillo, 25, made his major league debut with the Pirates this year. In 96 games, he batted .206/.251/.382 with 11 home runs.

Mears, 26, appeared in relief twice for the Pirates in 2022 and worked two scoreless innings.
