Pirates to Activate Anthony Alford, Recall Michael Chavis

Pirates’ manager Derek Shelton announced today that the Pirates will active outfielder Anthony Alford off the injured list, and recall infielder Michael Chavis from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Alford was placed on the 10-day injured list on August 15 with a lower back strain. In two separate stints with Pittsburgh this season, Alford is slashing .146/.239/.195 in 16 games.

Chavis was acquired at the trade deadline from Boston in exchange for left-hander Austin Davis. In parts of three seasons with the Red Sox, Chavis hit 25 homers with a .704 OPS in 168 games.

Since the Pirates acquired Chavis, he has slashed .246/.316/.536 (121 wRC+) with five homers and 12 RBIs in 17 games for Indianapolis.

Shelton says Chavis is in tonight’s starting lineup and playing second base.

Hoy Park has been optioned to Indianapolis and Rodolfo Castro has been optioned to Double-A Altoona to make room on the 26-man roster.
