Pirates Six-Game Winning Streak Snapped in Shutout Loss to Phillies

PITTSBURGH — After taking the first two games of the series, the Pittsburgh Pirates were unable to complete the sweep against the Philadelphia Phillies in a 6-0 loss at PNC Park on Sunday afternoon.
The loss put an end to the Pirates’ six-game winning streak, which was a season-long.
The Pirates’ offense was silenced by Phillies rookie Tyler Phillips, who tossed six-shutout innings in his third-career appearance. Phillips (2-0) scattered four hits, walked one and struck out three.
One of the three hits against Phillips was an Andrew McCutchen single in the third inning, which extended his hitting streak to seven games.
On the mound for the Pirates, Marco Gonzales was lifted after a Bryce Harper single gave the Phillies runners on the corners with two outs in the fifth inning. Dennis Santana relieved the Pirates’ starter and struck out Alec Bohm to escape the jam.
Gonzales (1-1) allowed a pair of runs on six in 4.2 innings. He walked one batter, struck out four and threw 56 of his 84 pitches for strikes.
Both runs against Gonzales came in the second inning. Weston Wilson plated Alec Bohm with a sacrifice fly and Garrett Stubbs snapped an 0-for-22 skid with an RBI single one pitch later.
With Kyle Nicolas on the mound in the seventh inning, it looked like the Pirates (50-49) had an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play, but shortstop Oneil Cruz dropped a throw from second baseman Nick Gonzales.
The Phillies (63-36) took advantage of the error by plating three runs. Trea Turner singled to bring home Stubbs and Harper followed with an RBI groundout to second. Bohm then singled home Turner to give Philadelphia a 5-0 lead.
Nick Castellanos padded the Phillies’ lead even further in the top of the ninth with a solo homer to left field off of Josh Fleming.
