Pirates Roster Moves: Shugart Returns From IL, Moreta Optioned

The Pittsburgh Pirates have reinstated right-handed reliever Chase Shugart (left knee inflammation) from the 15-day injured list prior to Monday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. To make room for him on the active roster, fellow righty Dauri Moreta was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Shugart joined the Pirates in early April and totaled 32 appearances prior to his knee injury. The 28-year-old went 4-3 with a 3.69 ERA while holding opponents to a .214 batting average. He earned his first big-league win on April 22 after tossing two spotless innings of relief against the Angels in Anaheim.

The right-hander made four appearances on his rehab assignment between Low-A Bradenton and Indianapolis and combined to allow one run on two hits with two strikeouts in four innings.

Moreta returned to the Pirates for the first time since 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in the 2023-24 offseason. Pittsburgh recalled Moreta on Aug. 2 and he allowed two runs on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Moreta surrendered a two-run home run to the Cincinnati Reds’ Noelvi Marte in the Pirates’ 14-8 loss at PNC Park on Sunday afternoon.

In 2023, his first season with the Pirates. Moreta totaled 55 relief appearances and went 5-2 with a 3.72 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 58 innings.
